Chellsie Memmell, bars: Like falling off a log.
Alicia Sacramone, floor: YIKES. Is there some reason they won't change that effing third pass of hers? Surely with her power, she could easily find something else that doesn't give her issues.
Jordyn Wieber, beam: Shocked she didn't fall off at some point. Wobbles everywhere, looked nervous and out of sorts. Let's see if she can pull it together for the other three.
McKayla Maroney, floor: OOB, then falls to her knees on her final pass. Nice choreo though, and she's a lovely girl.
Rebecca Bross, bars: Comes OFF on her first release! Jesus, what's in the water in St. Paul? Small step on the dismount.
Memmel is looking better and better by comparison here. It's the only hit routine in the broadcast so far!
Aly Raisman, floor: That first pass is so impressive. Hideous dance, as per usual, but a good leo color for her and she's working it a little better than at Covergirl. Hit routine. Tim "That was the first 'wow' set". NBC: ignoring Chellsie Memmel since 2003.
After rotation one, Raisman leads, duh, followed by the Caquatti.
Rotation two:
Bridgette Caquatto, bars: Misses a handstand and gets all scrambled around. Sigh. Marta must be shitting bricks now.
ASac, vault: Huge step on the Rudi, of course. Slightly smaller step on the DTY. She could do this in her sleep. Tim: "That was just good for Alicia." True.
Anna Li, bars: Hit routine. Doesn't throw the full twisting double layout, smart.
Jordyn Wieber, floor: Hate this music, it's like some kind of video game nightmare. She's basically nailing her landings, hit routine, but God help us if this is where floor exercise is going.
M. Caquatto, bars: Nice routine. Small step on landing.
Rebecca Bross, beam: This should be interesting. Stuck Arabian. Obligatory WOGA mention. Comes off on her back tuck HARD. Ouch. Poor thing, not sure if it's nerves or just that she's out of competition practice. Sits her dismount down. Good grief. Looks on the verge of tears.
Aly Raisman, vault: Throws her DTY....interesting. Apparently she had planned to do her Amanar.
Doesn't look like they're showing McKayla's vaulting, rats.
Sabrina Vega, bars: TOTAL meltdown. Breaks swing, hits her foot on the low bar, falls on a release. Again, NBC notes that everyone except Aly Raisman is struggling. God, if I was Chellsie....
Can't remember a VISA first day that was this rough, to be honest. Nastia Liukin is part of the selection committee for Worlds, which I didn't know.
Chellsie Memmel, beam: Come on, girl. First combo, rock solid. Long pause before Arabian. Rock solid SECOND combo. She's taking a while to set up for her elements, small step on dismount but SHE IS AWESOME AND EVERYONE CAN SUCK IT. Hit routine, crowd goes wild, big sigh of relief from Chellsie.
Shawn Johnson, vault: Slightly sloppy DTY. NBC is talking about how "Shawn Johnson is back" and I just want to shriek- not because I don't like Shawn, but because she's technically been "back" forever. Sigh.
Rotation three:
Jordyn Wieber, vault: Amanar, big vault with a hop. Nice air position, pretty textbook. I think this really is her strongest event.
Anna Li, beam: Wobbly Kochetkova, really has to hold it together on a full turning leap. Overtime, and messy double twist dismount. Not really anything to write home about.
McKayla Maroney, bars: Love her leo color. Misses a connection, clips her feet. She is not having a great meet, I don't know if that Amanar is going to punch her ticket for her if she can't at least keep it together on floor at least.
Mackenzie Caquatto, beam: These neon leos are just killing me. Nearly loses it on a side somi and comes off on her first combo.
The NBC crew are pretty down in the mouth about the whole situation. As they should be!
Rebecca Bross, floor: I'm just gritting my teeth here. New music. Great first pass. Nice spin with leg held up. Typical Bross choreo in that there's a ton of arm waving, but a hit routine. I think there was even a hint of a smile at the finish.
Aly Raisman, bars: Oh joy. Can't Mikai get her some help on this? He clearly hasn't got a damn clue about how to train bars. She's a great athlete but the form, the form, the form. It's painful to watch even though I suppose it wasn't a miss.
Casey Magee, beam: It's so cool that they're going to broadcast this routine. Has to fight on a side somi and comes off on a combo flight series, which is a shame. The commentators are really rooting for her which is great to hear.
Shawn Johnson, bars: Nailed routine! Small pause at one point but that same legs glued together technique and throws the twisting dismount with a small step. Way to go Shawn! Big smile from her.
Chellsie Memmel, floor: I'm going to be interested to see what skills she might have back that she didn't have at Classics. OOB on Arabian double front. Great double layout! Yay! Like Alicia she's working with the music really nicely. I think she still needs endurance training because she seems a bit winded, but a nearly stuck double pike to finish. Still though, hit effing routine.
Gabby Douglass, bars: Freaking scary dismount, big crowd gasp. Her age and inexperience are really showing, I think next year will be her time.
B. Caquatto, beam: Very nervous. Lots of little wobbles and then comes off. Visibly upset as she comes off the podium.
Final rotation:
Rebecca Bross, vault: I'm scared, she's looked rough on this all week. Made it, not great, but a miracle after training. Honestly, maybe she should consider scrapping AA this year? (I know, as if). But vault's never been her strong suit and things have definitely gone downhill this year. Not sure if she can get it together before Tokyo.
McKayla Maroney, beam: Is actually in 4th right now, which should give you an indication about how this day's gone. Comes off on her bhs bhs combo. Boy, rough competition for her, only 1 of 4 hit.
M. Caquatto, floor: Ugggggly twisting form on opening pass. Hit routine, she's had a good competition!
Aly Raisman, beam: Ugly leg form on flight series but holds it together. You can tell she's got that same mental toughness as Alicia, her gym does teach that even if they don't teach bars. Good Patterson dismount.
Chellsie Memmel, vault: Apparently she only got a 13.6 on floor? Bite me, VISA judges. For real. FTY vault, would have liked to have seen the DTY, but honestly if you don't trust the Memmel conditioning and training method at this point you're insane, so carry on, Chellsie.
Sabrina Vega, floor: Someone else who's had a horrendous meet. OOB on first pass. Remember when people were really excited about her? Not to be cruel, but I just don't see it.
Jordyn Wieber, bars: Dude, that was scary. Off at the start of the routine, truly fights through every single element. Upgraded dismount, clearly needs more work. I'd class this with her beam as not a miss, but not great.
Shawn Johnson, beam: Stays on for her first flight series! BARELY stays on for an aerial, comes back with a great second flight series. Is definitely going overtime here.
Gabby Douglass, beam: Comes off on first flight series. Boy oh boy, the new seniors are coming up short tonight. Comes off again on full twisting back tuck. God, poor girl. Sits down with Madame Chow for some TLC. Love the Chows.
ASac, beam: This girl's got some confidence, you can just see it in her stance. Such a contrast to basically everyone else tonight, except Chellsie. Stupid chest stand, I wish she'd omit it, but I wish she'd change her third pass on floor too, and that's never going to happen! She just does not give a single fuck.
AA Rankings:
1. Wieber
2. Raisman
3. Memmel
4. Bross
5. Maroney
Tim calls Chellsie the most valuable player on the beam tonight, which DUH. DUH.
What a freaking night, guys.
